The PayPal account is a virtual account: The identity of the account is defined by the PayPal member's email address, so there is no account number. The account can be used to make payments to third parties and receive payments from third parties. PayPal acts as a service provider for the transfer. PayPal does not act as a trustee, i.e. it only handles the payment processing, regardless of the service provided by the seller. An elementary advantage of PayPal - as with other micropayment systems - is that payments made via PayPal are immediately credited to the payee, thus eliminating, for example, the usual bank transfer time. Purchases made in an online store can thus be paid very quickly. This shortens the delivery time if the seller sends the goods promptly after receipt of payment. When PayPal is used for payment in an online store, PayPal collects transaction data that exceeds the scope of a normal bank transfer. If the online store transfers this data to PayPal, this includes the delivery address and the individual items of the shopping cart.PayPal members must register with their personal data; a bank account or credit card is not mandatory. If the PayPal member adds a bank account, PayPal will make a test transfer to the specified account to verify it. After that, PayPal members can send money to any email address in the supported countries. If the owner of the email address does not have a PayPal account, PayPal will notify him/her by email that a payment has been received at that email address. In order to dispose of the sent amount, the payee must be registered with PayPal or register as a new member.Furthermore, PayPal can be used via a web-enabled cell phone. Support for web-enabled pagers and other handheld devices is based on the authenticity of the assignment to PayPal members. A technology called "PayPal Here" also facilitates payment processes for smartphone users: Similar to the checkout in a supermarket, the credit card is pulled over a small attachment that is connected to the headphone output of the device. Checks can also be photographed via the camera built into the smartphone. The US company Square already uses a similar procedure. The participants' information is protected with TLS for each transfer. The PayPal member's financial information, such as credit card or account number, remains hidden from the payee, preventing misuse of this information by the payee. To send money to another participant with PayPal, there are several ways to deposit money:You can send money directly from a PayPal balance. In Europe, for example, the PayPal account can be topped up with a credit balance via normal bank transfer using a specific deposit code. The account-specific code provided by PayPal must be entered in the "reason for payment" field of the bank transfer. The loading via bank transfer usually takes about three days, but sometimes it takes much longer.A credit card can also be used for payment. In this case, the money does not have to be paid into the PayPal account first, but is collected from the credit card account and credited to the recipient. For German PayPal accounts, there are other payment options:It is possible to make payments via direct debit directly from your own account. In this case the amount is immediately credited to the payee's PayPal account and PayPal debits the amount from the payer's bank account within the next few days.Furthermore, some payments are only possible via direct debit with security check. If the amount is successfully debited from the payer's bank account by PayPal, the value date will be after the payment has been credited to the payee's PayPal account.
